We can't say it any better than this!
“…measurement lies at the very heart of both vision and strategy. It’s hard to overestimate its importance in determining the future course of a business. As for excitement, it is measurement that allows managers to harness vision to the earthly realities of daily business practice. Measurement turns vision into strategy and strategy into fact.”

“Measurement is the business idiom. Just as language shapes thought and communication, measures shape the attitudes and behavior of a business organization. The choice of what a business measures communicates values, channels employee thinking, and sets management priorities. Moreover, through their inclusion in the feedback loops that underlie all organizational learning, measures define what a company will become. Deciding what to measure and how to link measures to incentives are among the most important decisions a senior manager can make.”

Timing Isn't Everything But It's Close
Somewhat akin to the old accounting canard that the right answer a day late is the wrong answer is the fact that the right measure in the wrong place can be the wrong measure. Timing may not be everything but it is close.

We take the time to understand what is and isn't an appropriate measurement cycle which can often lead to significant performance improvements as well as reducing frustration and resistance.

INTERVAL -the space between measurements, i.e. one year, one quarter, one month, etc.
nm10-09027004.png
FREQUENCY - the number of measurements that constitute a valid data set. For example, should a three-month trend in a twelve-month moving average be recognized as a significant change?
nm10-09027003.png
SEQUENCE - should the measurement follow, precede or bracket the proposed independent variable and if so, by what interval?
