What is Referral Marketing?
Referral Marketing is essentially the original marketing. In the beginning, before there was media, before there was even the written word but as soon as there was language, there was word-of-mouth marketing.
Referrals are simply one person sharing their enthusiasm or appreciation for a product or service with someone else. That phenomenon is an expression of a very simple human need. We have explored the specific dynamics of referrals within familiar social models and can now explain exactly what it takes to access this powerful effect.
It may be worth noting that we use the terms viral and referral interchangeably although it is increasingly common to use the term viral only in the context of Internet marketing. That is the preference of Internet marketeers. We use the term in its purer, mathematical sense, which is to convey the exponential nature of the process.
